Our story begins long ago, when gods nonetheless ruled all. The beloved god Farasis is murdered past the feared god Zemet, ushering in an age of darkness. Mustering the final of his strength, Farasis then forges a magical sword.

I solar day, a youth recieves a devine bulletin. They and so set out to the Temple of Farasis to answer the god'south call…

You play equally either a nameless boy or nameless girl in Ankh Guardian, of which you are given the choice between 3 skins and 2 difficulties, with more difficulties to unlock, only every bit for whom you play every bit it is purely cosmetic. I chose the boy but rapidly grew tired of his plain design, then started over from the beginning every bit the girl, and from in that location my quest to save this Egyptian god began.

Ankh Guardian is an action puzzle platformer with a gimmick, in that certain outlined walls are destructible, hiding items or other stuff that you need in lodge to progress. You lot start fresh in every phase, with all weapons and extra hearts or mana you nerveless in the previous being stripped away from you lot, and so, the commencement thing y'all wanna do in each phase is to go look for a blade to defend yourself with against the evil forces of mummies, scarabs, and scorpions. In one case yous accept obtained it, traversing the stage is going to be your side by side challenge. If a platform is subconscious behind an already destroyed wall, you demand to detect a piece of wall in that same colour, in lodge to repair it, for the platform to motility or go concrete.

Ankh Guardian Screenshot 2

Information technology works the other way effectually though, in that if you lot are able to destroy the wall backside, say a gear up of spikes, these won't injure you lot as long every bit the wall is destroyed, plus you lot can kill enemies if yous lure them in forepart of a wall and destroy it.

The goal of each stage, is thus to navigate the labyrinth of platforms and other hazards, and repair every single wall in gild for the end goal door to open. This requires you to occassionally practice some puzzle platforming backtracking, as you need to destroy some walls, to obtain that wall piece for utilise on another already destroyed wall that tin can only be repaired with that item colour, in order for yous to gain access to something else that might help you, which is often a slice of wall to supplant the one you already tore downward.

The game starts off easy, with small levels that only accept i colour of wall for you lot to worry about, but halfway to the first dominate you have two colours to deal with, and a couple stages after him you have three, with the stages, of course, getting longer and longer as well. At that place is no mini-map to keep track of where you are or remind you of that wall you lot left destroyed at the get-go, though I didn't actually mind.

It may all audio like tedious busywork, but I actually kinda liked this idea of puzzle solving… if only the controls weren't so bad. Ankh Guardian works as a concept, and at that place is actually nil inheretly wrong with the stages themselves, but your character really could take used some extra fourth dimension in the oven. If their wonky "I only crapped myself" walking/running blitheness wasn't an immediate expressionless giveaway, you do as well feel the stiffness right away. Information technology doesn't break the game by whatever means, but it does feel very unnatural and clunky.

Ankh Guardian Screenshot

What you do need to watch out for though, is that if you go along running to one side, the camera will not center on you, on the contrary, it'southward similar the graphic symbol is too fast for the screen or wants to escape the game outright, meaning you won't be able to see incoming enemies in time to react if you do this. At present, with this being a puzzle platformer and not a Sonic game, I didn't really come across this theoretical consequence all that often, but not having the camera focusing on your grapheme or at to the lowest degree follow them, is a huge rookie error, even the first Super Mario Bros. did that. On top of that, some puzzle require yous to curl this ball onto a switch, and while the game does give you the selection to either push button it or scroll on pinnacle of information technology, it can be really finiky, and if you decide to roll on information technology, you automatically curl in the direction that you landed on information technology. Y'all can't alter direction on it, meaning you'll take to jump off and plow around mid-air. Adding insult to injury, yous can't even gyre enemies over with it, you will simply stop dead in your tracks.

Enemies practice as well respawn afterwards a certain menstruum of fourth dimension, and so watch out for that, especially the spear throwers. The game does tell you that you tin use the right analogue stick to manipulate the camera, even while on the move, so that is useful for not getting blindsided, but I withal don't like how instead of the devs just making a proper camera, they just leave information technology up to you.

As you lot progress through the game, you will exist faced with new hazards like poisonous pits and blocks on fire, the latter of which you need the upgraded h2o sword to bargain with, which automatically also grants yous a bow with ice arrows to both extinguish said fire blocks and make temporary stepping stones of walled fountains, which finally makes use of the mana bar that you lot for some reason accept regardless if yous possess something that uses it or not. You also get a set of boots that allows you lot to double jump, but like I said earlier, you kickoff fresh at every phase, and so any upgrades you accept acquired in a certain phase, is zapped away from you upon beating information technology, and must then exist re-caused in the next. This goes for extra hearts and mana also. On the flipside, if you end a stage with less than standard health or energy, this will be refilled. See, we are merciful here.

Be careful though, as wellness and mana drops, within a stage, are limited and random, meaning if you use upwards all your mana and find yourself stuck at a place where yous need it, you volition have to retry the stage.

Ankh Guardian Screenshot 3

I get what they were going for here, starting every phase with a clean slate, besides maybe because they didn't want y'all to be able to pause previous levels with your newfound upgrades, but I honestly don't actually like it all that much. When I become an upgrade, I like to keep it, and accept a nice inventory screen to keep track of my collectibles, though I guess this is more of a "me" trouble.

Speaking of collectibles, past the way, each stage features a treasure hidden behind a golden door, that you demand a fix amount of red orbs to obtain. These are ordinarily non that hard to acquire, but some, like standing still in front of a statue, which yous would only know if you read a sign telling you, can exist a bit cryptic. Most of them are adequately straightforward though, and some of the requirements are actually a bit fun, like escorting a cat or jumping in the air to mimmick a soaring bird. The treasure yous collect is then added to your collection, which yous can see in between every phase. In information technology also located via this large board of treasure, that y'all tin can choose to replay a phase, perhaps because you missed the treasure, or movement on to the next one.

At the first, I was a flake puzzled as to how the whole wall gimmick worked, maybe I didn't call up the game explained it well plenty, simply as they say "learning by doing", and I did indeed chop-chop get the hang of it and adapt. It is a rather fun game at times, what with the whole platforming while figuring out what walls to repair or leave destroyed for now in club to progress, but equally stated before, your character'southward wacky running animation does continue reminding y'all of the overall subpar quality. Plus, the exposition text doesn't fifty-fifty accept up the entire text box, what'due south upwards with that??

I would recommend, upon booting upward the game, that you turn your Tv set down a notch or ii, because, homo, is that principal carte du jour loud, just is it catchy and upbeat also!! Rocking an Egyptian anime-esque visual way, the music, of class, had to follow, immediately besides giving the audible vibes of existence on a quest in aboriginal Egypt. At that place aren't that many catchy tunes inside the game itself (I estimate they blew it all on the master card) just information technology feels varied enough and, like I said, information technology does fit the theme and make the world feel believable.

The game looks cute, and immediately caught my weeaboo eye with its anime icon and vibrant title font, merely for the price I feared that looks might take been all there was to the game. Presenting itself with nice, warm, exotic colours in order to lure unsuspecting gamers in for some epic action, and I was half right.

While I haven't had the game crash or had any performance issues per say, the game did, as mentioned before, quickly bear witness its uglier side as presently as gameplay began. Feeling jank and unpolished in many ways that are instantly noticeable, and for a game with such a swell and clever idea, I think that is a damn shame. I really urge the programmer to requite the game a liiiiittle more fourth dimension to cook, so that the functioning can friction match the cute artstyle!

Similar I said, the game drew me in with its unique visual mode, but for the price, the lack of a trailer on its eShop page, and the fact that I could detect side by side to no info on information technology elsewhere, let solitary other reviews (at the time of writing), I figured something was off. Ankh Guardian is not a terrible game by any means, merely it own't really adept either. Certain, I managed to have some decent fun because I like crap, and the game does, with its somewhat clever gimmick, offer some skillful entertainment value for the toll, simply I yet won't fully recommend it with a direct face. There is potential for improvement, and for the bargain price, it is a absurd niggling distraction, if you think you have the pocket change to spare, but in that case, delight get it on sale.
